This is a very interesting book. Robin Richmond is an artist and was on site when the Sistine chapel was renovated. She is able to speak of the Sistine chapel from the perspective of an artist and observer. Her comments are very interesting as is her perspective of the artistry of Michelangelo.

Michelangelo - Michelangelo - The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel: The Sistine Chapel had great symbolic meaning for the papacy as the chief consecrated space in the Vatican, used for great ceremonies such as electing and inaugurating new popes.

It already contained distinguished wall paintings, and Michelangelo was asked to add works for the relatively unimportant ceiling. The book gives a nice overview of the life of Michelangelo, his work and personality, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and the restoration.

It is easy and quick to read and the illustrations are beautiful and shows the impact of the cleaning and restorations made the last quarter of the 20th century/5. When Michelangelo actually started painting the Sistine Chapel Ceiling at the east end, probably in the early months ofthe implications of the structure had not been entirely established in his mind.

The first section still contains sharp discrepancies in scale between the large figures outside the central scenes and the smaller figures that crowd within them. Of all the marvelous images that crowd the immense complex of the Sistine Ceiling, The Creation of Adam is undoubtedly the one which has most deeply impressed posterity.

No wonder, for here we are given a single overwhelming vision of the sublimity of God and the potential nobility of man unprecedented and unrivaled in the entire history of visual art.
